San Francisco 49ers All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams didn’t report to training camp because he is seeking an adjustment to his contract, coach Kyle Shanahan said after the team’s first practice.
“I knew it could be a possibility. I feel pretty confident it will all work out in the long run, and he’ll be here and we’ll get on the same page with everything,” Shanahan told reporters Wednesday, adding that it’s just one day of practice.
Williams joins wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk as key 49ers players seeking new contracts. Aiyuk, who has demanded a trade, reported to training camp but did not practice on Wednesday. He was in shorts and a T-shirt watching from the side during practice.
Williams, an 11-time Pro Bowler who has been selected to the past three first team All-Pro squads, is signed through the 2026 season. He is slated to make a base salary of $20.05 million this season.
The Detroit Lions‘ Penei Sewell reset the top of the offensive tackle market with the four-year, $112 million extension he agreed to in April. The $28 million average salary in the deal makes him the NFL’s highest-paid offensive tackle.
Williams’ average annual salary in the deal he signed in 2021 is $23.01 million.
